Group 2 – Mrs Osmond and Mrs Marshall
In maths this week, our pupils have been focusing on making ‘teen’ numbers using bundles of their own straws and representing them with images such as ten sticks.
Children had to read the teen number in words, make it by touch counting and then write it in numerical form. Most importantly, pupils then had to describe the number made. Mrs O asks lots of questions…. ‘What does that digit mean?’ ‘What is that digit worth?’ ‘How do you know?’ ‘Can you show me?’ We also played spot the mistake to address misconceptions and encourage pupils to reason verbally.
By the end of the week, pupils were great at describing numbers using vocabulary, such as ‘groups of’, ‘ten’, ‘ones or units’.
